Cámaras Latinas at the MKE Home show, we each had 6-10 pieces showing! Pictured from left to right (Amanda, Nicole and Lila)
I love Milwaukee, I moved here from Puerto Rico when I was 17 and I would never go back. Milwaukee has good schools and jobs. I never had to really learn how to speak English because everyone in my neighborhood and the places I’ve worked have spoken Spanish. This place is good for my family.
I love to travel but when I’m away I always miss the beautiful lake, the neighborhoods and my mom and boyfriend who love here. Milwaukee is where I went to college, got my first real job and am building a career. Cream city!
All the friendly people I know, recognize, or have yet to know. My wife is here and that makes it home too. Ya know what I mean?
The pizza here is the best in the country, honestly.
My daycare/diaper changing service-Vulture Space.
I chose this Virgen De Guadalupe statue as my landmark because I can never walk past without taking a photo of her. I always find myself checking up on her like I check on my children when they sleep. It stands firm in the same spot off of 9th & National, through all of the changing seasons and years- undisturbed. To me, the fact that no one touches her reflects the values of the community in which it sits. She is a quiet, sacred symbol.
I chose Yvette & James for a few reasons 1. They literally made me face some not so good things I was putting myself through at a time in my life, and i am forever grateful for that experience and 2. Because they are one inspirational pair, no matter what community they are in they somehow manage to put it all into perspective!
Everything I need is here, like my toys and family.
Family makes Milwaukee home to me. My grandmother was the first one to settle here from Puerto Rico and she got to see all of us and this city grow and change.
What makes Milwaukee home is exactly what I do everyday. Everyday I roller-skate from the North Side through the South Side and back. I love to be active and eat right. Rollerskating helped me learn the city because Milwaukee is not my birthplace, my family migrated here from Mississippi.
The photos pictured above were of folks in the Downtown & Silver City areas of Milwaukee taken by myself. The question we were assigned to ask the people we photographed was “What makes Milwaukee home to you?” My favorite was by my 11yr old son Vincent when he said “Everything I need is here, like my toys and my family.”
Below is a short video that was shown on the opening of the gallery, taken in Milwaukee.
